Patent Bet Explained
A Patent is seven bets on three selections: three singles, three doubles and one treble. Because it includes singles, one winner is enough for a return, though often not enough to cover the stake. A £1 Patent costs £7, and an each-way Patent costs £14.

It is a Trixie with a single on each selection added. The four-selection version with singles is a Lucky 15.
What a Patent costs
Your stake is per bet, so the total is seven times your unit stake: 50p a bet costs £3.50 and £2 a bet costs £14. Each-way doubles the number of bets to 14, and the place half pays at a fraction of the odds.
A worked example
Say you place a £1 Patent (£7 in total) on three selections at 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1.
If only the 2/1 selection wins, its single returns £3, a loss of £4. If the 2/1 and 3/1 selections win, their two singles and the double return £19, a profit of £12. If all three win, all seven bets pay: £119 in total.
When a Patent pays back its stake
With £1 a bet, a single winner covers the £7 stake only if its odds are 6/1 or longer, because the single returns the odds plus the £1 stake. Two winners usually return more than the stake unless both are short-priced: two winners at evens return £8, just above the £7 outlay.
