Editorial note: this is a general guide to book slots at Fortune Games. Slot rules, features and RTP can vary between operators and game versions, so always check each game's information panel before you spin. Slots are games of chance — nothing here is a prediction of results, and no strategy changes the odds.

Book Slots

A book slot is built around a book symbol that is both the wild and the scatter, and a free spins round in which one chosen symbol can expand to fill its reel. Our guides credit Play’n GO with Book of Dead and Rise of Merlin, Inspired Gaming with its Christmas, Halloween and Irish editions, and Pragmatic Play, Nolimit City and 1X2gaming with others. Our guides to book slots we stock are listed below.

What makes a book slot

The book does two jobs. On a payline it is the wild, standing in for other symbols, and anywhere on the reels it is the scatter, so three or more books open the free spins. Book of Dead uses a golden book and Rise of Merlin a glowing tome, and in Book of Halloween, Book of the Irish and Book of Vikings, three, four or five books also pay 2x, 20x or 200x the stake.

Before the first free spin, one regular symbol is picked at random as the special expanding symbol. When enough copies of it land to make a win, it grows to cover its whole reel, and in games such as Book of Dead it then pays as if it were a scatter, so it no longer needs to sit on a payline. The pick matters: in Book of Vikings a card rank lands often but pays modestly, while the Viking warrior appears less often and pays more.

Book of Dead is an Egyptian adventure in which Anubis, a pharaoh and the explorer Rich Wilde pay the most, while John Hunter and the Book of Tut fills its reels with scarabs, ankhs and golden falcons. Rise of Merlin moves the format to Camelot, and Book of Loki and Book of Vikings to the Norse world.

How book slots differ

Most keep to five reels, three rows and ten lines. In Book of Christmas the line count is fixed, so every spin covers all of them, while Book of Shadows from Nolimit City lets you add a fourth or fifth row for 15 or 20 lines at a higher stake. Its Lucky Locks also hold chosen reels while you pay to respin the rest.

The free spins differ too. Book of Vikings sticks to one expanding symbol, and three or more books in the round add 10 more spins with no cap. In John Hunter and the Book of Tut, three more books also assign an extra expanding symbol, so a long round can run several at once. Book of Shadows lets you redraw its golden symbol once, and its expanded reels pay even when not side by side.

Our guides rate Book of Dead, Book of Halloween and Book of Vikings high volatility and Book of Shadows extreme. In Book of Dead, long quiet spells are normal and much of the value is concentrated in the bonus.

Where to start

  • Book of Dead: Play’n GO’s 2016 Egyptian adventure with Rich Wilde, the defining example of the format.
  • Rise of Merlin: Play’n GO’s 2019 Arthurian version, with Merlin himself among the top pays.
  • Book of the Irish: Inspired’s 2019 Irish-themed edition, with harps and pots of gold set to Irish folk music.
  • Book of Loki: 1X2gaming’s 2020 Norse game, with no ways, cascades or modifiers, just 10 fixed lines and the free spins.
  • Book of Halloween: Inspired Gaming’s gothic graveyard version, where a pumpkin is the top regular symbol.

Frequently asked questions

What are book slots?

They are slots in which a book symbol is both the wild and the scatter, and three or more books start free spins with a special symbol that can expand to fill its reel. Book of Dead, Rise of Merlin and Book of Vikings all work this way.

Which book slots can I play at Fortune Games?

Every game in the A to Z list above is in our lobby, including Book of Dead, Book of the Irish and Rise of Merlin, and John Hunter and the Book of Tut appears there as Book of Tut. Players must be 18 or over.

Do book slots give a better chance of winning?

No. The book and the expanding symbol do not change the odds: every slot is a game of chance, each spin’s result is random, and the RTP is shown in each game’s information panel.
