What Do You Win for 5 Numbers on Lotto?
Matching five main numbers on Lotto wins £1,000 under the 2026 rules — and if the Bonus Ball is your sixth number, that becomes a fixed £1 million. Every £2 line plays two rounds of the draw, giving each ticket two shots at both prizes.
The full answer under the 2026 rules
Five of your six numbers matching in a single round pays the fixed £1,000. This is also the only tier where the Bonus Ball exists: after the six main balls, a seventh — the Bonus — is drawn, and if your remaining number matches it, the prize jumps to £1 million. The odds per round are about 1 in 144,415 for Match 5 and 1 in 7,509,579 for Match 5 + Bonus.
Why the £1 million tier matters more now
The June 2026 changes doubled the number of rounds, which doubled the £1 million chances per ticket — Allwyn expects the yearly count of Lotto millionaires to rise from around 140 towards 345. In our simulation of 100 million tickets, 30 of them landed the Match 5 + Bonus million. Match 5 itself dropped from £1,750 to £1,000 per round in the same change.
The Bonus Ball, explained properly
The Bonus Ball does nothing at any other level — two, three or four numbers plus the Bonus win exactly what they’d win without it. It exists solely to separate £1,000 from £1 million at the five-number level, which is why it causes so much confusion further down the ladder.
Claiming these prizes
A £1,000 win online is paid to your account; in retail it’s claimed at the Post Office or by post depending on amount. The £1 million tier follows the National Lottery’s major-prize claim process, with validation and a choice about publicity.
