How to Play Lotto: A Beginner's Guide

The UK Lotto is the country's longest-running draw game and is simple to play. Here's how it works.

Step 1: choose six numbers

Pick six numbers from 1 to 59, or take a Lucky Dip for a random set. Each set of six is one line, costing £2.

Step 2: pick your draws

Draws are held on Wednesday and Saturday at around 8pm, with a 7:30pm cut-off. You can play a single draw or several in advance.

Step 3: the new two-round format

From 7 June 2026, every £2 line entered two draw rounds, improving the overall chance of a prize. The jackpot is still won by matching all six main numbers. For what each match pays, see the Lotto prize breakdown.

Step 4: check your ticket

After the draw, check your numbers against the results — see how to check a lottery ticket, and for the timing, what time the Lotto draw is.
