Do You Win Anything for 1 Number on UK Powerball?

Only if your Powerball matches too: one main number on its own wins nothing on UK Powerball, but one main number plus the Powerball wins a cash prize whose amount changes from draw to draw. The official odds of that match are about 1 in 92 per line.

One main number on its own

A UK Powerball line costs £4 and has five main numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball from 1 to 26. The prize table in the National Lottery’s game procedures has ten tiers. Without the Powerball, the lowest tier needs two main numbers, which pay a fixed £8 (capped only in very rare cases), a prize the US version of the game doesn’t have. A line with one main number and no Powerball sits below that, so it wins no prize.

One main number plus the Powerball

Add the Powerball and the picture changes. One main number with the Powerball is its own tier, called Match 1 + Powerball. It is a pari-mutuel prize: for each draw, a share of UK Powerball sales is set aside for the tier and split equally between every winning line in it.

That means the amount isn’t known in advance. When sales are higher or fewer lines match, each one gets more; when sales dip or more lines match, each gets less. Currency exchange rates can also move the amount. The rules also say that if a tier has more winners than expected, its prize might be lower than the prize in a tier below it. The actual amount for each draw is published with that draw’s results.

Even a line with no main numbers can win something here: the Powerball on its own is the Match 0 + Powerball tier, which also pays a prize that varies from draw to draw.

The lowest UK Powerball tiers

The odds below are approximate, per line, per draw, as given in the official game procedures.

Numbers matched UK prize type Odds per line
2 main numbers + Powerball Varies by draw 1 in 701
2 main numbers Fixed £8 1 in 28
1 main number + Powerball Varies by draw 1 in 92
Powerball only Varies by draw About 1 in 38
1 main number, no Powerball No prize Not a prize tier

The Powerball has to be one particular number out of 26, so for the same count of main numbers, adding the Powerball makes a match about 25 times rarer: two main numbers is about 1 in 28, but two main numbers plus the Powerball is about 1 in 701. Most lines win no prize in a given draw, every line has the same chance whichever numbers are on it, and no prize is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Does 1 number win anything on UK Powerball?

Not on its own. One main number wins only if the Powerball matches as well.

How much is 1 number and the Powerball worth?

It varies. The tier gets a share of that draw’s sales, divided between all its winning lines, so the amount changes each draw.

What are the odds of 1 number and the Powerball?

About 1 in 92 per line, according to the official game procedures.

Does the Powerball alone win anything?

Yes. Matching only the Powerball is a prize tier in the UK, with an amount that varies from draw to draw.
