How Is the UK Powerball Jackpot Paid Out?
A UK Powerball jackpot is paid over 30 years: Allwyn makes a first payment covering year one, and the rest of the prize fund buys an annuity that pays 29 yearly instalments, rising each year. Winners resident in the UK or Isle of Man cannot normally take a cash lump sum.
Prefer numbers? Slingo mixes a slot with a 5×5 number grid, and online scratchcards give an instant result.
New players: make your first deposit of £10 or more for one spin of the Mega Wheel, with a chance to win up to 500 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza. A prize is not guaranteed. Free spin winnings are paid as bonus funds with 10x wagering, up to a maximum set by Fortune Games, and the most bonus you can convert to real funds equals your lifetime deposits, up to £250.
18+. New players only. The spin isn’t given on a Quick Deposit or while a withdrawal is pending, and if you close the wheel without spinning it isn’t re-credited. Claim prizes within 7 days; bonus funds and pending offers are removed if your account is inactive for three days in a row. Full T&Cs. Fortune Games is not part of The National Lottery.
The first payment and the 29-year annuity
After a claim is validated, MUSL, the US Powerball body, sends the prize fund to Allwyn, which converts it into sterling at the rate of the day. At a payment meeting, the winner chooses the size of the first payment from two percentages set in the rules. What remains, after any US withholding tax and the cost of arranging it, buys a 29-year annuity through a broker. There is no equal-instalment option, and the policy cannot be cashed in.
| Payment | Timing | Paid by |
|---|---|---|
| First prize payment (year 1) | At the payment meeting | Allwyn |
| 29 annuity payments (years 2 to 30) | Yearly, starting about a year later, rising each year | The annuity provider |
Why the advertised jackpot is not a cash figure
The jackpot shown before a draw estimates the total a winner would collect over 30 years, at the exchange rate when advertised. The final sterling value depends on exchange rates after the claim is validated, so the amount paid can differ, and tax can affect it too. If more than one entry, in the UK or the US game, matches all five main numbers and the Powerball, the jackpot is shared equally.
When a lump sum applies
A single lump sum is paid to a winner not resident in the UK or Isle of Man when they claim, or to a deceased player’s personal representative. A large syndicate can choose one, and Allwyn may pay one if an annuity cannot be arranged for reasons outside its or the broker’s control. Any lump sum is lower than the advertised jackpot, which includes expected annuity growth. If a winner dies before the annuity ends, the provider pays a lump sum death benefit to their estate, based on payments made and still due.
Frequently asked questions
Can you take the UK Powerball jackpot as a lump sum?
Not normally. A lump sum is paid only in cases the rules set out, such as a winner not resident in the UK or Isle of Man when they claim.
What happens if a winner dies before the 30 years are up?
The annuity provider pays a lump sum death benefit to the winner’s estate.
Is the UK Powerball jackpot taxed?
Winners complete US tax forms and US withholding tax may apply. The interest part of each annuity payment can be taxed; the capital part is usually tax-free, depending on circumstances.
