Online Gambling Slots: How They Work
Every online slot is a game of chance. A random number generator (RNG) decides each spin, the RTP sets what a game pays back over millions of spins, and UK rules control how fast and how high you can play. Here is how it fits together, with examples from the Fortune Games lobby.

Random number generators
An RNG produces the outcome of every spin. Each spin is independent: what happened on the last spin, the time of day or how long you have been playing makes no difference to the next one. In the UK, games must be tested by an independent test house before they go live, and the result of a spin is set by the game, not by the site. That is also why no system can predict or influence a spin. Our guide to RNGs in gambling explains how this works.
RTP and volatility
Return to player (RTP) is the share of all stakes a slot is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. Each game's information panel shows its RTP. Volatility describes how wins are spread: low-volatility games pay small wins more often, while high-volatility games pay less often but can pay more at once. Neither figure predicts a single session: over a short run anything can happen, and RTP only evens out over a very large number of spins.
Paylines, ways and scatter pays
- Paylines: wins land on set lines across the reels. Big Bass Bonanza has 10.
- Ways to win: matching symbols on adjacent reels pay wherever they land. Megaways games change the number of symbols on each reel every spin, so the number of ways changes too, often up to 117,649 depending on the game; Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways is one example.
- Scatter pays: enough matching symbols anywhere on screen pay out. Gates of Olympus pays for eight or more.
- Cluster pays: groups of touching symbols pay, as in Aloha! Cluster Pays.
UK rules and your tools
Online slot stakes are capped at £5 per spin, or £2 if you are 18 to 24. Spins last at least 2.5 seconds, autoplay is banned, and every slot must show how long you have been playing and whether you are up or down. At Fortune Games you can set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits, take a break or self-exclude from the Responsible Gaming page, and GAMSTOP covers every licensed site in Great Britain.

Frequently asked questions
Are online slots random?
Yes. A random number generator decides every spin, and each spin is independent of the last.
Can you beat online slots?
No. No system, timing or pattern changes the odds, and over time a slot pays back less than is staked.
What is a typical RTP?
Each game's information panel shows its RTP. It can differ between games, operators and versions, so check the panel in the version you play.
Are online slots legal in the UK?
Yes, for adults aged 18 or over, on sites licensed by the Gambling Commission.
