Online Slots Stake Limits in the UK

The UK has introduced legal limits on how much can be staked on online slots in a single game cycle. These were a central proposal of the 2023 White Paper and are part of a wider effort to reduce the risk of large losses during long playing sessions.

The limits

For players aged 25 and over, the maximum stake is £5 per game cycle. For younger adults aged 18 to 24, the maximum is £2 per game cycle. The lower limit for younger players reflects evidence that this group is more vulnerable to gambling harm.

When they came in

The £5 limit took effect on 9 April 2025 and initially applied to all adults. The lower £2 limit for 18 to 24 year olds followed on 21 May 2025. They were introduced through a Statutory Instrument that attached a new condition to remote casino licences.

What counts as a game cycle

A game cycle is, in simple terms, a single spin: it begins when you place a stake and ends when the result is settled. The limit applies to the total staked within that cycle, so an operator cannot offer additional staking opportunities that push the total above the cap for your age group.

What the limits do not cover

The stake limits apply to online slots only. They do not apply to other casino games such as roulette, blackjack or live dealer tables, which have their own rules. The aim is specifically to reduce the intensity of slots, which research links to higher average losses than other online products.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum stake on UK online slots?

£5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over, and £2 per game cycle for those aged 18 to 24. The limits came into force in spring 2025.

Do the limits apply to roulette or blackjack?

No. The stake limits cover online slots only. Other casino games such as roulette, blackjack and live tables are not subject to these particular caps.

What is a game cycle?

Essentially one spin: it starts when you place a stake and ends when the result is settled. The cap applies to the total staked within that cycle.

Why are the limits lower for 18 to 24 year olds?

The Government pointed to evidence that younger adults face a greater risk of gambling harm, with this age group showing some of the highest average problem-gambling scores. Setting a £2 limit for 18 to 24 year olds, against £5 for those aged 25 and over, is meant to reduce the intensity of play for the group considered most vulnerable. The lower cap took effect slightly later, on 21 May 2025, after the general £5 limit came in on 9 April 2025.
