How Ghost of Dead plays
Wins are paid along 10 lines on a 5x3 grid, and the paytable climbs from the card royals to a serpent and an ankh, then a scarab and, at the very top, the mask of Pharaoh Unas. The Canopus Scatter does two jobs. It is the game’s wild, standing in for the pay symbols to complete lines, and it is also the symbol that counts towards the free spins.
Any Canopus Scatter can change into a Spectral Canopus Scatter as the reels turn. The Spectral kind keeps the wild role, and it feeds the second, stronger free spins round instead of the ordinary one. On top of that, the pharaoh can step in at random with a Ghost Spin, so an expanding symbol can show up even while you are still waiting for scatters.
Ghost Spin
A Ghost Spin begins when Pharaoh Unas leaps from the reels on a random spin. The game picks one pay symbol at random and makes it the Special Expanding Symbol for that spin alone. If enough copies land to form a win, each one stretches to cover its whole reel. If no win would come of it, nothing expands and the spin settles as it landed. Because the choice is random each time, any pay symbol, royals included, can be the one that grows.
Free Spins
Three Canopus Scatters in view open the Free Spins. Before the first spin you are offered a choice of pay symbols and keep one as the Expanding Symbol for the whole round, instead of having it drawn for you. Whenever that symbol can complete a win, it fills its reels. Three or more Scatters during the round retrigger it, and the retriggered spins carry on with the symbol you already chose, so the round never swaps it out on you midway.
Awakened Free Spins
Landing three or more Spectral Canopus Scatters unlocks the Awakened Free Spins in place of the standard round. You still choose one Expanding Symbol for the round, but the Ghost now joins in and picks a new extra Expanding Symbol before every spin. That means two symbols can stretch across the reels on the same spin: yours, which stays fixed, and the Ghost’s, which changes from one spin to the next.
Ghost of Dead compared with Book of Dead and Legacy of Dead
All three games build their free spins around an expanding symbol. Book of Dead, from January 2016, draws a single symbol at random before the round and keeps it for every spin. Legacy of Dead, from January 2020, uses the same 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 paylines as Ghost of Dead, also chooses its Special Expanding Symbol at random, and its Tomb Scatters can keep landing during the round for more spins.
