How Codex of Fortune plays

The reels are filled with jewelled symbols drawn in a French Art Nouveau style, and line wins are counted across 40 lines on a 5x4 grid. A butterfly jewel is the wild and fills in for the regular paying symbols. Scatters are the route into both features: two of them on a spin that also has a line win start Fortune Re-Spins, and three of them start the free spins.

What sets the game apart is Fortune Wins, the prize ladder that both features use. It has 7 levels, each split into 5 steps that pay more the higher you climb. Collecting symbols moves you up the steps, while keys lift the whole ladder a level at a time. The three sections below follow the ladder, the respins and the free spins in turn.

Fortune Wins and the keys

Every visit to the ladder starts on its lowest step. Each Key symbol that lands raises the Fortune Wins by a level, and NetEnt increases every prize on the ladder when that happens, including the one for the step you have already reached. Keys also give you a decision at the end of each round of respins: use them there and then to collect the prize your step is worth, or keep them for the free spins instead. That choice is NetEnt’s Save the Keys feature.

Fortune Re-Spins

Fortune Re-Spins start when two scatters land on the same base-game spin as a line win. The symbol that made the win becomes the collectable for the round, and every collectable that lands counts towards the next step: five of them fill the meter and move you one step up. The respins carry on while collectables or keys keep arriving, and the round ends on the first respin that brings neither. As a worked example, ten collectables and no keys would take you two steps up the first level before a blank respin ends the round.

Free spins and the wheel

Three scatters in the base game start the free spins, but first you stop a wheel. Where it lands decides three things: how many free spins you get, which symbol you collect during them, and how many extra keys are added to level up the Fortune Wins. In the free spins every collectable that lands fills the meter, a special +10 symbol fills it by ten at once, and 20 spaces move you one step up the ladder.

Codex of Fortune at Fortune Games

NetEnt’s own range for Codex of Fortune starts at 20p a spin. UK rules then cap every online slot spin at £5, or £2 for players aged 18 to 24, with no autoplay. Among the games beside it in the tiles above, Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest and Dead or Alive have guides of their own. Fortune Games has an app on the App Store and Google Play.

Frequently asked questions

How many saved keys can you use in Codex of Fortune’s free spins?

Up to three. Before the first free spin, any keys you saved from earlier Fortune Re-Spins can be used to level up the Fortune Wins, so the round can begin on a higher level than the first.

How many free spins does the Codex of Fortune wheel give?

Between 7 and 13. The count is fixed when the wheel stops, at the same moment as the collectable symbol for the round and the number of extra keys, so all three are known before the first free spin is played.

Where is the top prize in Codex of Fortune?

On level 7 of the Fortune Wins ladder, the highest level, and it is a free spins prize: the cap on the ladder’s prizes during Fortune Re-Spins is much lower. Both caps are in the key facts table as multiples of your stake.
