Big Buffalo slot
Big Buffalo is a Wild West slot from Skywind, released in 2019, with 6 reels, 4 rows and 4,096 ways to win. Three to six scatters award 8, 15, 25 or 100 free games, and during that round any wild that helps to make a win adds a random 2x or 3x multiplier to it. The round can be retriggered with no limit on how often.
Editorial note: this guide explains how Big Buffalo works. Rules, features and payout figures are set by the studio and can differ between operators and game versions, so check the game’s information panel before you play. How Big Buffalo plays
The game is set on the plains of the American West, and the animals that live there supply the main symbols: the buffalo itself, a bald eagle, a wolf and a fox. Big Buffalo has no paylines. Every spin covers 4,096 ways, so a win needs matching symbols on neighbouring reels counted from reel 1, and each symbol can sit in any of the four rows of its reel.
The wild is a picture of a canyon landscape, and it stands in for other symbols to complete a way. The scatter is the Free Games symbol, which counts wherever it lands. Big Buffalo is rated high for volatility, and its features sit in the free games: up to 100 of them, with multipliers on the wild.
Free Games
Three or more Free Games scatters anywhere on the reels start the round, and each extra scatter lifts the award sharply. Three give 8 free games, four give 15, five give 25, and a sixth scatter takes the round to 100. More scatters can land while the free games run, and the round can be won again with no cap on the number of retriggers. The canyon wild keeps substituting throughout, and the next section covers what it adds there.
The 2x and 3x wild multipliers
During the free games the wild takes on a second job. Whenever it helps to make a win, it adds a multiplier to that win, picked at random as either 2x or 3x. As a worked example, a win worth £1.20 without the wild would be paid as £2.40 or £3.60 with a multiplying wild in it. Each wild win gets its own random pick of 2x or 3x.
Big Buffalo compared with Buffalo Blitz and Buffalo King
Buffalo Blitz runs on the same 6x4 grid with 4,096 ways and the same free games scale, 8, 15, 25 or 100 for three to six scatters. Its multiplying wild in the free spins can carry 2x, 3x or 5x. Buffalo King, also a 6x4 game, awards 8 to 100 free spins for three to six bonus symbols, and every wild in that round carries 2x, 3x or 5x. Big Buffalo stops at 3x per wild, so of the three it has the smallest multipliers in its free games.
| Game | Grid | Free games for 3 to 6 scatters | Wild multipliers in the free games |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Buffalo | 6x4, 4,096 ways | 8, 15, 25 or 100 | 2x or 3x |
| Buffalo Blitz | 6x4, 4,096 ways | 8, 15, 25 or 100 | 2x, 3x or 5x |
| Buffalo King | 6x4, 4,096 ways | 8 to 100 | 2x, 3x or 5x |

Frequently asked questions
Are Big Buffalo and Big Buffalo Megaways separate games?
Yes. Skywind lists Big Buffalo Megaways as a separate title in its catalogue, alongside a third game, Big Buffalo Badlands, and our lobby gives each its own tile, straight after this one. Everything in this guide, from the 6x4 grid with 4,096 ways to the 8 to 100 free games, describes Big Buffalo itself.
Which reels can the Big Buffalo wild land on?
Reels 2 to 6, and that is true in the base game and in the free games alike. Both the substitution and, in the free games, the random 2x or 3x come from wilds on those five reels.
Does the Big Buffalo wild multiply wins in the base game?
No. The random 2x or 3x belongs to the free games, where it is added to each win a wild helps to form. In the base game the canyon wild is there to substitute for other symbols and complete ways.
