Editorial note: this is a general guide to Aztec slots at Fortune Games. Slot rules, features and RTP can vary between operators and game versions, so always check each game's information panel before you spin. Slots are games of chance — nothing here is a prediction of results, and no strategy changes the odds.
Aztec Slots
An Aztec slot takes its theme from the Aztec, Maya or Inca civilisations: their temples, gods, carved stone and gold. Our guides credit the games here to Pragmatic Play, Red Tiger, NetEnt, WMS (now part of Light & Wonder) and Microgaming (now part of Games Global), with Firebird Spirit built by Pragmatic Play alongside Wild Streak Gaming. Our guides to Aztec slots we stock are listed below.

What makes an Aztec slot
Carved stone and temples set the scene. In Gonzo’s Quest, carved Mayan blocks tumble from above instead of spinning, and Mayan Gods mixes Mayan temples with visiting UFOs. Aztec Gems is a jungle-temple take on the three-reel classic, while Montezuma fills its reels with feathered serpents, golden masks, warriors and the emperor himself.
Treasure is the other thread. Explorer Jim hunts for the lost city of gold in Jungle Jim – El Dorado, where a round Aztec relic is the scatter and a treasure chest is among the relics. Gems Bonanza is an Aztec excavation of jewels and carved totems, and Yucatan’s Mystery has a stone head, a blue mask and a priestess among its premium symbols.
Falling symbols and multipliers recur. Gonzo’s Quest has Avalanches, Jungle Jim – El Dorado has Rolling Reels and Mayan Gods has Chain Reactions: in each, winning symbols clear, new ones drop in, and consecutive wins raise a multiplier. Aztec Gems adds a fourth reel of nothing but multipliers, and Montezuma spins a multiplier wheel before every free spin.
How Aztec slots differ
Layouts range from tiny to sprawling. Aztec Gems from Pragmatic Play has a three-by-three grid, five paylines and no wilds, scatters or bonus rounds, just a multiplier reel showing 1x to 15x. Yucatan’s Mystery from Red Tiger uses five reels, four rows and 30 paylines, with Mystery Coins in place of a standard wild. Firebird Spirit has 1,875 ways on a 5-5-3-5-5 grid, plus a sixth reel of bonus symbols. Gems Bonanza pays for clusters of five or more matching gems on an eight-by-eight grid, which then cascades.
Bonus routes differ too. In Firebird Spirit, a chain of touching Connect & Collect symbols must link the first reel to a bonus symbol on the sixth, or to a special position on the third, and the awards include fixed prizes of 50x, 200x and 4,000x stake. Gems Bonanza has no conventional free spins round; every winning symbol feeds its Gold Fever meter instead. Mayan Gods has no free spins either, relying on four random features such as the Mayan UFO, which swaps low-paying symbols for high-paying ones.
Our guides rate Jungle Jim – El Dorado medium volatility, Mayan Gods medium-high, and Yucatan’s Mystery, Firebird Spirit and Gems Bonanza high. Stated maximum wins include 3,680x stake in Jungle Jim – El Dorado, 4,250x in Firebird Spirit and 6,013x in Mayan Gods, and these are upper limits rather than likely outcomes.
Where to start
Four guides that show the theme in different ways:
- Gonzo’s Quest: NetEnt’s 2011 game, where carved Mayan blocks fall instead of spinning and the Free Falls multiplier can climb to 15x.
- Montezuma: the WMS temple expedition, whose multiplier wheel lands between 2x and 10x before every free spin.
- Jungle Jim – El Dorado: Microgaming’s 2016 hunt for the lost city of gold, with a Multiplier Trail that can reach 15x in free spins.
- Yucatan’s Mystery: Red Tiger’s November 2020 Mayan-themed game, where a Super Mystery Coin can grow to cover the whole grid in free spins.
All values (Bet Levels, Maximum Wins etc.) mentioned in relation to this slot game are subject to change at any time.
