Online Video Slots Explained
A video slot is the modern online slot: usually five or more reels, an animated theme and bonus features such as free spins and multipliers. Most of the 1,000-plus slots at Fortune Games are video slots. Here are the features you will meet, and games in the lobby that show them. The theme has no effect on how a game pays; the features and the maths do.

Features you will meet
Most video slots combine several of these:
- Free spins: a bonus round, usually triggered by scatter symbols, that plays without taking your stake.
- Multipliers: values that multiply a win, sometimes growing during a feature.
- Wilds: symbols that substitute for others. Expanding wilds fill a reel; sticky wilds stay in place for several spins.
- Tumbling reels: winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, giving more chances to win from one spin.
- Bonus games: separate rounds, such as pick-and-win screens or wheels, that award prizes.
- Ways to win: some video slots drop paylines and pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels, or anywhere on screen.
Video slots in the lobby
- Gates of Olympus: pays for eight or more matching symbols anywhere, with tumbles and multiplier symbols.
- Big Bass Bonanza: 10 paylines, with a free spins round where fisherman wilds collect the cash values on fish symbols.
- Eye of Horus: an expanding Horus wild that upgrades symbols during free spins.
- Gonzo’s Quest: Avalanche reels, where each win in a row raises the multiplier.
- Dead or Alive: a free spins round with sticky wilds.
- Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways: a Megaways game where the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin.
Reading a video slot’s help screen
Features can be complex, so the help screen is worth a minute before you play. It shows the rules, the paytable, how each feature triggers and, for most games, the RTP. It also shows the maximum win, usually as a multiple of your stake, and the stake range. Our slot comparisons also set games side by side on volatility and features.
UK rules for video slots
UK versions of video slots have no autoplay or turbo spins, each spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds, and a game may not celebrate a return that is no more than your stake. Stakes are capped at £5 per spin, or £2 if you are 18 to 24, and every slot shows how long you have been playing and whether you are up or down. Deposit limits and breaks can be set at any time from the Responsible Gaming page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between video slots and classic slots?
Classic slots keep the fruit machine look with few features. Video slots add themes, more reels and features such as free spins and multipliers.
What are tumbling reels?
Winning symbols disappear and new ones drop into their place, so one spin can produce several wins in a row.
Do bonus features change a slot’s RTP?
The RTP already includes what the features pay over time. Features change how wins are spread, not the long-run return.
How many video slots are there?
Most of the more than 1,000 slots in the Fortune Games lobby are video slots.
