How the race works
The Grand National is a handicap steeplechase of about four miles and two and a half furlongs, with 30 jumps over two circuits of Aintree’s National Course. Since 2024 the field has been capped at 34 runners, down from 40. Horses must be at least seven years old and rated 125 or higher, and because it is a handicap, the higher-rated horses carry more weight.

Last year’s winner
The 2026 Grand National, run on Saturday 11 April, was won by I Am Maximus, ridden by Paul Townend and trained by Willie Mullins. He started as the 9/2 favourite and had also won the race in 2024. ITV has held the TV rights since 2017, and BBC Radio 5 Live covers the race on the radio.
