Wild Wild West: The Great Train Heist slot review

Wild Wild West: The Great Train Heist is a NetEnt slot that went on general release in February 2017. It plays on five reels and three rows with 10 fixed paylines, aboard a steam train crossing the frontier. The headline feature is the free spins round, where a wild selector chooses one of four wild types to use on every spin of the bonus.

How Wild Wild West: The Great Train Heist plays

The base game is lean: 10 fixed lines, wins from left to right and a standard wild for the paying symbols. Four Wild West characters fill the top of the paytable, and playing card royals cover the lower values. Two further symbols carry the features:

  • 7 scatter: three, four or five anywhere start the free spins.
  • Bonus safe symbols: three landing on reels 1, 3 and 5 in the same spin open the pick-and-click bonus.

The pick-and-click bonus is quick: your pick reveals a cash prize of between 5x and 50x stake. It gives the base spins a second route to a prize besides the scatters, which matters on a slot with only 10 lines.

Free spins and the wild selector

Three, four or five 7 scatters award 10, 20 or 30 free spins. Before the first spin, the wild selector turns and stops on one of four wild types, which then stays in force for the whole round:

  • Regular wild: as in the base game.
  • Expanding wild: grows to cover its whole reel.
  • 2x multiplier wild: doubles the wins it helps to form.
  • Spreading wild: can add more wild positions to the reels around it.

Free spins can also be retriggered during the round. Because the selector sets the wild type up front, two rounds of the same length can play very differently, unlike western slots with one fixed bonus. Which wild you get is random.
