How online blackjack works at Fortune Games
Blackjack is played against the dealer: the aim is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Number cards count at face value, picture cards as 10 and an ace as 1 or 11; an ace with a 10-value card as your first two cards is blackjack. You hit (take another card) or stand (keep your total), and going over 21 is a bust, which loses the hand.
In the games on this page the dealer is software: a random number generator (RNG) decides which cards are dealt, so each hand is random and no system changes the odds. The dealer plays to fixed rules shown in each game’s help screen, and our guide on how to play blackjack covers the basics.
If you want a real dealer, our Live Casino section streams live blackjack tables such as Live Blackjack 1, Hippodrome Live Blackjack and Blackjack Manchester: see our live blackjack lobby.
Baccarat is different: you back the Player, the Banker or a tie, then make no further decisions. See blackjack vs baccarat and how to play baccarat.
Blackjack games in our lobby
Our computer-dealt blackjack games are in the Table & Card section of our lobby, including Multi Hand Classic Blackjack, Classic Blackjack, BlackJack MH and Vegas Blackjack. Rules and bet limits differ from game to game, so open the help screen first; our guide to casino table limits explains minimum and maximum bets.
DoubleDouble Bonus Poker is a video poker game (see what video poker is), and European Roulette 2 is roulette on a single-zero wheel.
Single-deck and multi-deck blackjack
Blackjack can be dealt from a single deck of 52 cards or from several decks shuffled together. The number of decks makes a small difference to the odds, but so do a game’s other rules, so don’t choose on deck count alone.
Multi Hand Vegas Single Deck Blackjack is in our lobby; its help screen shows its rules, and our guide to single-deck vs multi-deck blackjack explains the differences.
Splitting, insurance, soft hands and surrender
Not every game offers every option; check the help screen.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Splitting | If your first two cards are a pair, you can split them into two hands, adding a second bet equal to the first. See what splitting is. |
| Insurance | Offered when the dealer’s face-up card is an ace: a side bet that the dealer has blackjack, which you lose if they don’t. See how insurance works. |
| Soft hand | A hand where an ace counts as 11, such as ace-6 (soft 17); one more card can’t bust it, because the ace can drop to 1. See what a soft hand is. |
| Surrender | Some games let you give up your hand and get half your bet back. See how surrender works. |
Playing blackjack for real money in the UK
In Great Britain, play only at a site licensed by the Gambling Commission. fortunegames.com is listed on the Commission’s public register under account number 39175, and our guide on how to check a casino is licensed shows how to look it up.
A licensed site must check your name, address and date of birth before you can gamble, and gambling with a credit card has been banned since 14 April 2020. We take Visa and Mastercard debit cards, Maestro, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafecard and pay by mobile (£2.50 fee per deposit). The minimum deposit is £10, and withdrawals are paid to a card registered on your account, never to pay by mobile.
Set a budget before you play (see setting a gambling budget), add daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits, and read how GAMSTOP works if you want to self-exclude.
