Lottery Odds in Perspective
We all know the lottery is a long shot — but just how long? Putting the odds in perspective helps explain why it’s best treated as a bit of fun rather than a financial plan.
The jackpot odds
The EuroMillions jackpot sits at around 1 in 140 million, and Lotto at roughly 1 in 45 million. These are vast numbers — far longer odds than most everyday risks people worry about. A single line really is a tiny chance of the top prize.
Why people still play
The appeal isn’t the maths — it’s the small, affordable hope of a life-changing win, plus the money raised for good causes. That’s perfectly fine, as long as it stays fun and affordable.
Better odds for smaller prizes
If you simply want a better chance of winning something, games like Thunderball (about 1 in 13) and the Health Lottery (about 1 in 9.7) beat the big jackpot games. See the odds of winning the lottery and the easiest UK lottery to win.
