How Fairytale Legends: Hansel and Gretel plays

The story is set on a journey through a dark, enchanted forest, and the reels keep to a classic 5x3 shape with 10 lines. Coloured symbols make up the low end of the paytable, Hansel and Gretel are the higher-paying pictures, and the Fairytale Legends logo sits at the top.

The wild substitutes for the other paying symbols, and in the base game it lands as a stack on reels 2 and 4 only. A bonus chest symbol also appears, and three of them open the main bonuses. Everything else that can change a spin comes from the fairies, who act at random rather than through a symbol you need to collect.

Stacked Wild Respin

Whenever a stacked wild fills a whole reel, the game gives a free respin. During that respin the stacked wilds are no longer limited to reels 2 and 4 and can turn up on any reel, which widens the spread of substitutes for that one spin. The Fairy Wild Spin, covered below, also ends in a free respin, so there are two routes to one.

The fairy features

Three fairy features can trigger at random. The Fairy Wonder Spin drops a cluster of 5 to 9 of the highest-paying symbols onto the reels for a single spin. The Fairy Wild Spin adds two full stacks of wilds and, after the wins are paid, awards a free respin. Fairy Surprise only appears on a spin that would otherwise lose: one symbol is chosen and symbols change into it until a win is made.

The bonus chests: Candy House, Free Spins and Coin Win

Three bonus chests unlock one of the three main bonuses. Candy House is a picking game: you choose 3 of 15 hidden picks, each with a multiplier behind it, then either take the average of the three or settle on one of the multipliers you uncovered. The free spins option awards 10 spins, and Coin Win pays an instant prize, listed in the key facts.

Fairytale Legends: Hansel and Gretel compared with Jack and the Beanstalk

NetEnt took on another fairy tale in Jack and the Beanstalk, and the two make an instructive pair. Jack’s game uses the same 5x3 grid but 20 paylines instead of 10. Its Walking Wilds trigger a respin each time they move one reel to the left, and wins made with them are multiplied by 3x, whereas Hansel and Gretel’s respin needs a stacked wild covering a whole reel. Jack’s scatter chests open 10 free spins with a key collection on reel 5 that upgrades the wilds, while the chests in Hansel and Gretel choose between three different bonuses.

Game Grid and lines Wild feature
Jack and the Beanstalk 5x3, 20 paylines Walking Wilds: a respin each time the wild moves one reel left; wins with a wild multiplied by 3x
Fairytale Legends: Hansel and Gretel 5x3, 10 paylines Stacked wilds on reels 2 and 4; a wild filling a whole reel triggers a respin

Frequently asked questions

What is Fairytale Legends: Hansel and Gretel?

It is NetEnt’s slot version of the old tale, set on a journey through a dark, enchanted forest that leads to the witch’s house. NetEnt launched it in 2017 as the second game of its Fairytale Legends trilogy, following Red Riding Hood, and built its base game around random fairy features and stacked wilds on reels 2 and 4.

Can a losing spin still pay in the Fairytale Legends: Hansel and Gretel slot?

Sometimes. Fairy Surprise can step in on a spin that has not produced a win and transform symbols into one chosen symbol until a win appears. It triggers at random and has nothing to do with the bonus chests, so it can arrive on any spin that misses rather than waiting for a feature symbol.

How do you choose in the Candy House bonus?

After making three picks, each showing a hidden multiplier, you decide how to be paid: the average of all three, or one of the multipliers you picked. The choice is made only after all three multipliers are on show, so you can compare the average with each single value before you settle.
