Review of cupcakes

It seems that NetEnt no longer releases new games at the same rate that they once did, and there isn't the same excitement in the air when they finally do release a new title as there used to be. Cupcakes is a candyland slot machine that follows in the footsteps of so many other slots that have been based on Sweet Bonanza's design. Although there is no reskin job involved in the game, you do get a weaker math model, and the way the win multiplier is calculated is different as well.

I would say that the graphics of the candy world are what you may expect from a release like this, and if you are on a diet, then this is probably not the game for you. It's the 2x2 sized cupcakes that accumulate multipliers at the bottom of the grid that make this game stand out somewhat; they add up to a significant amount of points. There is a multiplier that can go as high as x100 (sound familiar? ), and the multiplier does not reset during the bonus round. However, the maximum win is only 2,762x, but the volatility is still high since the maximum win is only 2,762x.

Features of the Cupcakes slot machine

In order to win, you must land a minimum of eight matching symbols anywhere in the view of the screen, and the winning symbols are removed using the Avalanche mechanic. As you win, new and/or existing symbols appear to fill the gaps, and this process continues as long as you keep winning, so long as you keep filling up the gaps. The gumdrop symbols have a size of 1x1 and the cupcakes have a size of 2x2.

When the Cupcakes tumble down to the bottom of the screen, they stack on top of each other and accumulate, while the Gumdrops take part in the scatter pays symbol removal system. The gumdrops of the same color as the frosting of a cupcake will, however, accumulate on top of the frosting if they are the same color. To add a value to the total win multiplier, a cupcake must be filled with at least 10 gumdrops, and the cupcakes come with a random multiplier value from 2 to 100, depending on the cupcake you choose. In between the spins of the base game, the multiplier starts all over again.

When 5+ gumdrops part of a win are part of the Crush feature, and they are spread over 2 reels with a minimum of 2 gumdrops on each reel, then this feature will trigger. After that, a cupcake will drop through the reel pair, and you will be able to see it for yourself. The same does not happen if the reel pair also holds a scatter, or two cupcakes from the previous reel pair. There is also no possibility for it to happen if there are already four cupcakes present in total at the time.

A minimum of three Cupcake Tub scatter symbols on the reels is required to trigger the Bonus Round, and you can receive 10, 13 or 16 free spins depending on whether you land 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols. As a result of landing 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols during the bonus round, you will win 3, 6 or 9 extra spins. There is a big difference between the base game and the bonus game, which is that the multiplier is never reset. The bonus round can be bought for 100x the stake for non-UK players, as well as anyone eligible to play it. The free spins will be credited to your account after this action.

200 spins on the Cupcakes slot machine

Cupcakes from NetEnt was a decent experience, although it came across as a clear spinoff from Sweet Bonanza and does not stand out as anything special. In any case, we have created a short and edited highlights video for your viewing pleasure, as we usually do every week. You can take a look at everything for yourself below by pressing the play button on the video to play it for yourself.

Summary of the review

In terms of NetEnt's evolution after being acquired by Evolution, Cupcakes is a pretty good example of why the company hasn't been the same since the acquisition. They do a lot of things these days that are half-hearted, and it makes me wonder what's going on with them. At this point it appears that the team is trying their very best to get back to the creative spirit of the glory days, but somehow they are not able to do so. Obviously, there is some inspiration for Cupcakes coming from a certain Sweet Bonanza, and if you have seen a candyland theme once, you have pretty much seen them all.

Although the multiplier system is much more complex, the end result is pretty much the same, even though the multiplier system is much more complex. As a whole, it's a decent production, and it's not uncommon for developers in this business to find inspiration in popular slots when they are developing new products. In spite of that, it makes us wonder whether the good ole' NetEnt that we remember will ever be able to return to its former glory. There are better sweet tooth alternatives available out there even if the potential of 2,762x does not reflect the halfhearted approach.
