A theme and graphics for your website

North American themed slots are pretty popular these days - and since Novomatic started releasing them so quickly, other developers have followed suit. The latest game to enter the genre is Cowboys Gold from Pragmatic Play. This software company has gained significant traction in recent years.

Upon opening Cowboys Gold, you'll notice the American theme; it's clearly based on the old Wild West, and although it has a basic (and somewhat bland) look and feel, it immediately sets the scene.

Among the lower-paying symbols in Pragmatic Play's game are 10, jack, queen, king, and ace, which represent playing card values. These all look pretty cool and have a Wild West-like feel and look. Golden horseshoes are the game's highest-paying symbol, along with spurs, whiskey bottles, guns, and whiskey bottles.

In addition to the Sheriff's Badge, you'll also see a Sheriff's Badge on the reels; this is the wild symbol of the game, which substitutes for all other symbols except the scatter symbols.

RTP and volatility of Cowboys Gold

Pragmatic Play classifies Cowboys Gold as a medium variance slot. In general, this means you can expect to see fairly frequent wins - but they usually won't be huge. On the other hand, a high variance slot delivers fewer - but bigger - wins. With an RTP of 96.50%, Cowboys Gold is a decent slot, but you should note that Pragmatic Play offers most of their slots in different RTP settings, so you should verify which RTP setting you are playing at with your online casino.

Bonus features of Cowboys Gold

In this part of our Cowboys Gold slot review, we're going to examine the different bonuses and features you'll find inside. We haven't reviewed a game that's as action-packed as this one, but there's plenty to keep you entertained.

Feature for collecting money

There may be a small coin overlaid on some of the Cowboy symbols when they land in view. After you place your bet, this coin displays a cash value, ranging from 1X to 100X. You'll be paid out for all of the coin values on the screen if these small coins appear (land) when the special renegade symbol appears - only on the 5th reel.

In many of Pragmatic Play's other slots, we have seen this bonus mechanic implemented. It's fair to say that the Money Collect feature isn't anything new, intuitive, or special. This is a shame, in our opinion.

Spins for free

Playing Cowboys Gold is most enjoyable when you activate the free-spins bonus round. In the base game, three bonus scatter symbols must land on the middle three reels to trigger the feature. The free-spins bonus can be re-triggered three more times if you manage to trigger it once. You will receive 10 free spins for doing so. In order to do this, you need to land three more scatter symbols on the middle three reels.

The re-trigger feature is what makes the free spins bonus worthwhile, as each time you manage a re-trigger a multiplier increases. For example, if you retrigger the free spins for the first time, the multiplier will increase to 2X. As soon as you trigger the bonus again, the multiplier increases to 3X, and if you manage to re-trigger it three times in a row, you'll be left with a 5X multiplier for the remainder of the game.

Money Collect, which is available during the bonus, makes things even more interesting. With an active multiplier, all coin wins are also multiplied, meaning a single coin can award a payout worth up to 500X your bet! A couple of these on a single spin could result in a 1,000X+ payout!

Review of Cowboys Gold

There's no doubt that Cowboys Gold is a pretty solid slot. There's no doubt that Pragmatic Play's graphics, sounds and animations are well-made and professional, and the game certainly stands head and shoulders above other leading slots on the market today. As the RTP is a healthy 96.50%, you can expect a decent amount of playtime. You can win up to 6,065X your bet when playing Cowboys Gold, so there is definitely win-potential here.

Our main complaint with Cowboys Gold is its lack of bonuses and features. Money Collect has been used so many times by Pragmatic Play and other game developers. It just feels so overdone. Mustang Gold, however, has multipliers and reel modifiers, so it's pretty bland during the base game. As for the free spins round, the multiplier is only 5X, which leaves much to be desired. The multiplier could have increased here, or at least more wilds could have been added by Pragmatic Play.

Cowboys Gold isn't a bad effort from Pragmatic Play, and it's a decent little game for those who enjoy more classic, basic slot machines. If you’re looking for a slot that makes use of a proven concept, Cowboys Gold is likely to go down well with Pragmatic’s player-base. But it won’t be overtaking NetEnt’s Dead or Alive 2 or Nolimit City’s Deadwood as the leading Wild Wild West slot.
