Adventures of Captain Blackjack: Slot Overview

Maybe give Adventures of Captain Blackjack from Just For The Win a miss if anachronisms in films irritate you like kilts in Braveheart or Converse sneakers in Marie Antoinette. Since Blackjack, the card game, wasn't known as such until much later, swashbuckling in the Caribbean peaked in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In addition to Vingt-Un, or Veintiuna, there is an unconfirmed theory that the game was invented by the Romans. Blackjack is, however, believed to have started in Nevada in 1931, the year gambling was legalized. As history is a subject that can be debated, especially online, let's let Captain Blackjack slide for now and see where his adventures lead.

A wooden portside settlement has been established on a watery, seaside location similar to the towering mountains of St Lucia. There is an alluring lady pirate on the left side of the 5x3, 20-payline game grid, dangling precariously on a rope. On the other side of the screen are four fixed jackpots, whose values are multiples of the current stake. A screen with tentacles, chests, and wheels has a very Just For The Win feel - visually and in terms of all the extras crammed in.

With a volatility rating of 'Very High', regular wins occur at a rate of around 1 in 4 spins (23%), while free spins and the Kraken Wheel can generate sizeable wins. In spite of several types of RTP, the highest value is 96.18%, while other stats remain nearly the same regardless of the theoretical return.

A treasure can be collected when three or more matching symbols appear left to right from the first reel. Bottles, bombs, swords, pistols, and four pirate character symbols are listed from lowest to highest value. Captain Blackjack pays 20x the bet for five of a kind. For the other three people and the other four objects, this drops to 5-12.5x. The wild symbol replaces any other symbol on the reels. Wild lines have the same value as Captain symbols.

Adventures of Captain Blackjack: Slot Features

There are two features in Adventures of Captain Blackjack that can lead to larger wins. The Kraken Wheel and free spins are responsible for these.

Kraken Wheel

Players can spin the Kraken Wheel whenever Kraken Coins appear on the reels. The Mini, Minor, Major, and Mega prizes are worth 15x, 40x, 250x, or 5,000x the bet, respectively, when it triggers. Wherever the wheel stops, the prize is awarded. There is no way to trigger the Kraken Wheel from free spins, only from the base game.

Free Spins

At least three skull and crossbones symbols award six free spins. Also, 3, 4, or 5 scatters in view grant players 3, 4, or 5 bonus feature picks. Picks are made on a screen that displays nine closed chests. There is a bonus feature in each game, such as:

Extra spins – 3, 4, 5, 6, or 9 additional free spins.

Multiplier - +1, +2, or +3 is added to the win multiplier.

A mid symbol is upgraded to a wild symbol.

A low symbol is upgraded to a mid-symbol.

During free spins, you will receive a win multiplier of x1 (or higher due to picks), and when you land 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols, you will receive 1, 2, 3, or 4 additional picks. Once all 16 features have been awarded, only free spins can be won.

Adventures of Captain Blackjack: Slot Verdict

Did you know that in earlier forms of Blackjack, participants received ten to one payouts for landing the black Jack of Spades or Jack of Clubs plus an Ace of Spades? Players familiar with the modern form of Blackjack will know that this rule has been changed. The look and gameplay of Adventures of Captain Blackjack are reminiscent of a number of previous JFTW games. As in other works they have done, a similar feel and spirit is evoked.

In terms of gameplay, Adventures of Captain Blackjack is pretty standard. In a humdrum base game, the Kraken Coin collection leads to possible Kraken Wheel spins. Despite theoretically being able to win more from free spins, the Kraken Wheel's top prize seemed more realistic. The modest number of paylines and symbol values did not exactly inspire optimism.

Sure, there's the win multiplier bonus feature, if you can collect them from the feature pick section, though the value maxes out at x7, which is handy but still leaves players with plenty of work to do. Still, potential in free spins is technically decent, capped at 5,000x the bet or £/€250,000, presumably whichever comes first.

Overall, Adventures of Captain Blackjack was an okay release from Just For The Win. It has the decent looks, sounds, and features we've come to expect from the studio, but isn't particularly noteworthy. It isn't necessarily a bad thing; just pointing out that Adventures of Captain Blackjack isn't Just For The Win's way to start the year off with a bang; instead, the studio is easing into it.
